ABOUT
THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Mats Ekqvist got a telephoto lens as a graduation gift, this
became the starting point for his photographic career.
His interest for photography had started when he was in high school,
alongside an interest for psychology. The latter resulted in a degree and
subsequently as a job as a psychologist. However, in the last few years his
photographic interest has taken over more and more.
During his first experiences as a photographer Mats explored his
great passion for nature and animals which had started during his childhood
when he spent most of his summers in his parent's cottage on the outskirts
of Stockholm. To begin with he took photos of mooses and birds, always with
the ambition to seize a maximum number of different bird species, technically
as perfect as possible. His interest for lyrical pictures also awoke early
and became intensified when he spent most of his summers in the city after
his parent's cottage was sold. This subsequently inspired him to take photos
of Stockholm and it's surroundings.
In his photos,
especially those of the city, Mats takes great pains to wait for the exactly
right moment, just to be able to catch as interesting pictures as possible
with exciting light effects. This requires not only considerable time but
also a lot of patience.
Throughout the years he has also become more and more interested in abstract
subjects. You can sometimes find psychological symbols in his photos.
Mats had his first exhibition at the end of the nineties at Mosebacke
in Stockholm. Six collective exhibitions in Stockholm promptly followed (at
Poolgalleriet and Studio fem), out of which three were exclusively with pictures
of Stockholm, as well as two separate exhibitions in Öland.
